Introducing… Miarlequin

A witchy, vintage synth watercolour soundscape about kindness in your own neurodivergence.

If you enjoy mystical art pop that sounds like it’s bathed in early 70’s psychedelia, then I have a new artist for you. Miarlequin hails from Calgary, and she makes music about neurodiversity and mental struggles. Her music is created through a prism of high fantasy, cottage core, and a love of mystical chamber pop. Think an alternative reality Loreena McKennitt, Enya or Natasha Atlas, who really loves tarot and early 70’s synths. I’m also reminded of Celestial North and the edges of Iona from that mystical folk side of faery music.

‘The Fool’ is the title track from Miarlequin’s debut EP. It constantly surprises with its dewy, glistening, whimsical approach and unusual, witchy chord progressions. Its vintage synth tonality lends a stage show musical quality to it, too. Speaking about the song and the EP, Miarlequin said:

“The Fool EP is an amalgamation of neurodivergent experiences. It is a testament to people who have been told they are different or unacceptable and fully embracing your differences. It is also a rejection of contemporary classical music. During music school I learned that many music movements were reactions to the previous movement, sometimes a rejection or an evolved version. Mine is a rejection.

Each track in this EP speaks about some form of marginalized identity outlining different neurodivergences, mental illnesses and women’s experiences. Overall, The Fool is about embracing yourself, what you love, and that it is okay to be different in this world.”

‘The Fool’ asks the listener to be kind to themselves, and its dreamy soundscape will help you get there. Both the single and the EP are out now. For more information about the release and upcoming shows, visit Miarlequin’s website.
