Introducing… Makk

Yorkshire-based indie folk that focuses on moods and waves of emotion over immediate hooks.

If you are looking for some textural indie-folk from the heart of England, then Makk should fit the bill. Makk is the stage name for singer-songwriter David Mills-McEvoy, hailing from Yorkshire. I discovered his music through an accidental rabbit hole on Instagram and was immediately drawn to its duality of traditional acoustic folk and experimental delivery. Each track has a beautiful acoustic guitar, a vibrant violin, a shuffling drum beat that often stumbles and flinches, and layers of unusual ambient synth textures. Makk’s music is often quite stop-start structured, like waves of emotional outpourings. It took a few listens to click, as each song side-straddles around more direct riffs to convey a more cinematic mood and tone instead. It takes a bit of getting used to, but I was intrigued and wanted to find out more.

It turns out I discovered Makk just in time for his forthcoming second EP, ‘Overlook’. Two singles that I’d expect to be on that EP are ‘Overlooking’ and ‘Ghost’, both of which Makk has performed live with his band at Evoke Studios earlier this year. Both tracks showcase Makk’s personable vocals and distinctive horse-trot indie folk perfectly. The EP is due out in February 2026.
