Molly Joyce was seven years old when she was involved in a car accident that nearly amputated her left hand. It took several intensive surgeries, and still to this day, her hand is impaired. This has led Molly to explore different ways to create sounds with her hands, which in turn has shaped the music she creates. Exploring electronic tonal music, haunting vocals, and a deeply personal sound, Joyce announces ‘State Change’, her forthcoming album.
Lead single ‘August 6, 1999’ is the date when the car accident took place. The aural, crystalline and deep dub drone noises mix with a lonely electric crackle. Molly Joyce’s voice is layered like an isolated choir, drifting in slow motion as her world changes forever around her. The music video showcases a couple of the tech tools Molly uses. One is called the MUGIC (Music/User Gesture Interface Control) sensor, and another is the KAiKU Music Glove. These tools allow Molly to create sound through gestures, rotation, and pressure pads to give human nuance to the performance.
The album ‘State Change’ will play out as a chronological report of Molly’s injury, operation, and healing. Using all the adaptive technologies and her voice, it is going to be a haunting and cathartic journey back to feeling back in control of yourself again. The single ‘August 6, 1999’ is out now.
