Embodying everything great about psychedelic rock from the 70s and smearing an ethereal Krautrock sheen over the top, Midnight Rodeo returns with a new single and album. The quintet mixes jangly guitars, thick organs, crazy synths, and percussive influences from across the globe to create music with verve and drive behind it. Everything from their logo artwork, to the bedroom rock hazey production screams “we were born 40 years too late”. Yet like Temples, Midnight Rodeo also sounds like a modern take on psych rock, with a poppier feel.
Much of this modern feel is down to Maddy Chamberlain. Her ethereal vocals, expressive performances, and outsider vibes are of today’s indie scene. That, alongside the band’s energetic, uptempo, and dare I say upbeat music, lets them straddle psych pop and rock with aplomb. As the Nottingham-based band are so gung-ho, I think fans of surf rock will lap this up too.
‘Daisy’ is the lead single from the forthcoming debut album ‘Chaos Era’. Speaking about the single, Maddy says, “Daisy is about that moment in a relationship when you realise you no longer want to be in it and deserve better. Nothing will come to save you; you have to do it yourself.” The video is a satirical, comedic look at 18th-century psychoanalysis and etiquette training. Watch out for the vomit spew.
