Introducing… The Family Battenburg

Welsh garage rockers The Family Battenburg aren’t just a band with a tasty name. They blend together messy, muddy, fuzzy psychedelic rock with highly saturated production. The result is what the band calls ‘Spider Rock’. To me, it feels like the ’70s psych-rock world but with today’s DIY garage punk clothes on.

‘Anteater’ is their new single, showcasing the Spider Rock sound. The Family Battenberg says the track is an anti-love song. In this story, the protagonist justifies totally changing everything about themselves in the pursuit of love. “It’s self-humiliation in the pursuit of a potential suitor’s attention,” as frontman Eliot puts it. The first two minutes are a bashful and poised statement of intent, before the second half of the track plays with tempo changes, slowing right down to a crawl before rushing into a frenzied finale. It is great fun.

‘Anteater’ is out now. For more information about The Family Battenberg, follow them on Instagram. There are plenty of live dates across the UK if you want to see them live. Their reputation precedes them for giving a great show.
