Egyptian-born, Montreal-based producer, composer, vocalist, and actor Nadah El Shazly has announced her second album ‘Laini Tani’. It comes with a move to One Little Independent Records who are already known for their artisanal selection of musicians who break the mould. Nadah fits that description by blending experimental sounds with traditional Arabic influences and a genre-tsunami delivery. It is avant-garde in some ways but never to the point of being obtuse.
Nadah El Shazly was born and raised in Cairo and was in a band called Sick Gdrch before exploring electronic production and composition. Her debut album ‘Ahwar’ was released in 2017 and set the tone for mixing the traditional with the contemporary. Since then she’s been working on soundtracks and released an experimental noise album ‘Pollution Opera’ with Elvin Brandhi. All these projects bring elements of them into the new album ‘Laini Tani’ which will weave traditional Arabic improvisations and scales, harp and electronics from Sarah Pagé, and guttural industrial beats.
Lead single ‘Ghorzetein’ showcases Nadah’s unique style perfectly. Roughly translated the title means ‘Two Stitches’ and the song explores the wound of a heart that has loved and been broken not once, but twice. It has a raw pulsating heart rhythm kick drum that gets increasingly louder and more bombastic as the track evolves. More traditional percussion joins the attack as if the song is reviving Nadah’s heart from the depths below. Add in staccato shockwave synths, raging industrial noise guitar shrouds, and El Shazly’s focused and emotional vocals and you have a stunning track to entice you in. Nadah soars, rages and blooms into a defiant onward march towards the battlefield of love once again. Put simply, it is one of my favourite songs of 2025 to date.
‘Ghorzetein’ is out now with a dreamlike music video that is like a gothic Arabian cabaret trip. It’s the closing track from the forthcoming album ‘Laini Tani’ which is due for release on 6th June and is available for pre-order now.
