The title of this post says it all really. Electronic quartet Anamanaguchi brings us the most hardcore track I can think of in their repertoire – a cover of Nirvana’s ‘Territorial Pissings’. The band commented that it’s been 33 years since Kurt Cobain screamed ‘I’d better wait’ at the climactic finale of their song and they felt it was time to revisit the track to see if the sentiment and urgency remained.
The answer is a resounding yes.
Anamanaguchi clearly wants to mark their territory as they embrace the violence of raw Nintendo soundchips. The song has a wall of noise from Nintendos to blown-out guitars to Hatsune Miku opening the track as we slide into the digital apocalypse and enshitification of all the digital things we love. It is a visceral attack on the senses and buried somewhere in the noise are the vocals of Peter Berkman, taking on vocal duties for the band and pixelating his voice into binary erosion.
This is a glorious cover and if Anamanaguchi would like to embrace their dark punk side, my appetite has been whet. You can purchase the cover and follow Anamanaguchi on Bandcamp, and enjoy the “I’ve been trapped in demoscene FPS nightmare” music video below. It nails the mood perfectly.
